Chapter 12

On their way out of the restaurant, Alistair stopped still at the door and wouldn’t budge. The canine persisted staying in one place despite Jet’s nudges and tugs on the strong, leather leash. “Now buddy, I know you want to hang around to see if you can get some more treats, but we have to go home and at least make an effort to finish up the applique for the festival. You know Zella will lose her mind if it’s not finished at least two days before the show.”

Despite Jet’s prompting, the canine stayed put which was unusual for him. He sat in a dead stare at the door. Jet sighed and turned around, shrugging her shoulders at Henry who stood behind her. “I don’t know why he’s behaving this way. Normally he’s as good as gold. I guess all that good food has made him feral.”

Henry stepped up beside Jet and knelt down to the dog, stroking Alistair’s head gently and said, “Now buddy, I don’t know what’s wrong, but I’m sure whatever it is your Mom has you covered.” Alistair stood up on his hind legs and gave Henry a soft lick on the cheek. Henry then placed his hand on Jet’s shoulder and said, “Let’s walk together and maybe that will persuade him.”

As they started for the door together, Henry pointed to Jet’s car and said, “Hey, do you know that guy?”

“Oh my goodness! Is he trying to break into my car?! Henry, do something!”

Henry ran outside and stood at the door yelling at the perpetrator, “Stop! Police! Turn around and show me your hands!”

Henry’s approach did nothing to stop the would-be thief from immediately turning around and running away from the vehicle. Henry bolted towards the man who appeared to be bigger with square shoulders and looked as if he could have been a linebacker for a pro football team. He wore all black and had a knit cap pulled down over his head, but as he fled it did rise up in the back, allowing Jet to see what might have been a completely bald head. Jet gasped as Henry made an attempt to chase the criminal who easily outran him. Jet’s heart froze in her chest as she wondered if it could be Hoyt.

Henry returned to her out of breath and sweating, “I lost him around the corner. Do you know who it was?”

“No, Henry I can’t possibly say for certain.”

“Well since he fled there’s not much I can do for you right now unless you’d like to go to the station and file a report with us. I’ll still mention it to the Sheriff so he will make the townspeople aware there might be a burglar lurking around. You know how folks around here just leave their doors unlocked.”

“Yeah, you should definitely let people in town know.” They walked closer to the car to inspect for damage, but nothing was out of place. Jet hadn’t really had anything but some old planters and a few trowels in the backseat and it appeared nothing had been disturbed.
